Our lab at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay studies how animals run, swim, and fly through their environment. On a small scale, a hummingbird’s ability to turn-on-a-dime may allow it to escape from a predator. On a large scale, whales migrate thousands of miles between their feeding grounds and breeding grounds, using routes and speeds that are finely tuned to save energy. Our research uses techniques such as video-tracking, bio-logging, and hydrodynamic modeling to examine how animals move, and how this ability affects their ecology, behavior, and evolution.
